Sacramental Preparation and Catechesis for Children attending non Catholic Schools

Parents or guardians of children who do not attend Catholic Schools but who wish their children to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation are asked to do the following:

  1. Inform their local parish priest of their intention to receive the sacraments in the parish where they are resident.

  1. Parent/guardians resident in the parish of St. Mary's in Athlone are asked to complete an application  form stating their intention for the appropriate sacrament.  This form is available from the parish office.

  1. Children from outside the parish are asked to approach their local parish for such sacraments and preparation.

  1. These children will then participate in a period of catechesis and preparation outside of school hours, organised by the parish.

  1. Parents/Guardians are kindly asked to contribute both financially and  practically to this preparation and catechesis.

  1. The particular Holy Communion ceremony such children will attend will be decided on rota each year by the priests of the parish.

Important: If, for some reason, your child has not been baptised, and you wish  them to receive the sacraments, then you must apply for baptism for them by 31st  October at the  Parish Office. We will arrange for a preparation course to be done  with them. Any applicants after this date will not be eligible to receive the sacraments until the next school year.
