Mission alert! Happy New Year to you all from Ferbane Apostolic Work. We would like to tell you about ourselves and our work for the missions. We are now the only apostolic work group in the diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnois. We are unique in that we are the only diocese in the 32 counties with only one apostolic group. We are currently looking for new members to form even a small group. Perhaps as you read this you may feel that you and some of your friends may wish to help us in this worthwhile mission. It will not take up much of your time and we will be there for you all the way.
Our group in Ferbane has 14 active members and 50 honorary members; the latter pray for the missions and give a subscription of €5 each year. We meet once every fortnight from mid-September to mid-April with generous Christmas holidays! To raise funds we have a church gate collection each year and a big sale of work at Christmas when representatives from 11 missionary houses come to receive sacred vessels, vestments and donations. As well as that, if any other missionary writes to us, we will try to respond as best we can. God has been very good to us and there is always something in the kitty.
The mission situation today--at present there are 1119 missionary sisters, 1090 missionary priests, 194 missionary brothers and 26 lay missionaries from Ireland working around the world. As you know, they work with the poor and the sick in the most impoverished places in the world and we are privileged to be able to help them with our prayers and material goods.
